The “Kitty Cold”

Although cats don’t get head colds exactly the same way humans do, they can and do get sinus infections and upper respiratory infections with many of the same symptoms as a human. Here are some tips and tricks to help support your cat through his or her illness.

Feed the cold

Cats that cannot smell will not eat, and being stuffed up often leaves a kitty uninterested in food. Ways you may help to perk up your cat’s appetite include:

  • Feed fragrant canned foods
  • Warm canned foods in the microwave for 5 seconds before feeding (Note: always stir very thoroughly and check for hot spots so your pet doesn’t burn his tongue!)
  • Drizzle a small amount of tuna water or low sodium chicken broth over your cat’s food
  • Feed on a flat plate instead of in a bowl

Any cat that has not eaten for more than 24 hours should see a veterinarian immediately. Cats that do not eat are prone to developing very serious liver disease.

Stop. Shower time!

Giving your cat a “steaming session” will help to moisten his airways and break up his congestion. Close your bathroom door, turn the shower on hot, and let the room fill with steam. When it has, bring your cat into the bathroom, close the door behind you, and keep the shower running until you are finished (5-10 minutes maximum).

Stay in the bathroom with your cat while he is enjoying his “sauna.” Make sure he stays up at sink level so he breathes in enough steam. Watch him closely for overheating; if he seems agitated or starts panting or open-mouth breathing, take him out of the room right away. This is especially important for pets that have fevers.

As always, consult your veterinarian before implementing any home care if your pet is ill. Please call any time with questions.
